The Buteyko method is based on the work of Russian Doctor Konstantin
Buteyko. Dr. Buteyko discovered that many people, but especially Asthmatics, over breathe.
Over breathing, or hidden hyperventilation, leads to low levels of carbon dioxide in the
body. Contrary to popular belief carbon dioxide is not just a waste gas. In fact, it is
responsible for balancing many bodily functions. Hidden hyperventilation over time
creates many health problems. Dr. Buteyko believed that Asthma is the body's defense
mechanism against too great a loss of carbon dioxide. The Buteyko breathing exercises
teaches you to retrain your breathing center to accept normal levels of carbon dioxide.
People who have successfully done the exercises have experienced Asthma free living and
overall improved health.
The Buteyko method has been taught for over 40 years in Russia. In the 1990s, it was
introduced to Australia, New Zealand the U.K., and more recently to the U.S.A. Clinical
trials have demonstrated that people practicing the Buteyko method have reduced their
reliever medications by 91% and their use of steroid medication by 49%.
